Question: Salam & hi doctors. I have a 13 month old son. He used to know how to clap hands when he was 7 months old but now he just ignored when we asked him to clap hands or do anything. He will sometimes respond to us when his name is called.but when he is busy with something, he won’t respond. He doesnt know how to wave bye bye or pointing. Im worried. He is my first born staying with only me and husband while babysitter takes care of him during daytime. Is he showing symptoms of autism? Appreciate your reply. Thank you. (Nurul)
Answer: HI Nurul, Are you sure he was able to clap hands at 7 months because that is not the normal age for clapping. What they do mostly at 7 months is transfer object from one hand to the other or bring their hands together and that is not considered clapping. clapping usually starts at about 12-13 months. It is normal not to respond if a kid is engrossed in something but if he does respond most of the time, then that is not a criteria of autism. May I suggest that you read the autism article on our website to have a clearer idea. What about his speech? What about his eye contact? You can go the website and type autism at the search button.

Hi doctor. thanks a lot for your feedback. I have been observing him for a while and noticed that he doest point to object and doesnt understand when anyone points as well. Flaps most of the time. Doesnt wave n clap either by 14month old. understand NO and WANT. Cannot speak just yet. No single word. And doesnt know what is what. Eg ball, car, daddy mummy. These are all gathered at the moment. I have nephews whom are of the same age n he knows a lot but my son dont. Im super worried and scared as

Anak saya 10 bulan 26 hari..saya hendak bertanya, saya selalu memanggil nama anak saya. Ada sesekali dia menoleh secara perlahan-lahan dan saya tidak pasti adakah dia menoleh kerana faham akan nama nya atau secara tidak sengaja dia memandang ke arah saya..tetapi kebanyakan waktu apabila saya memanggilnya die tidak menoleh dan buat tidak tahu sahaja. Saya juga pernah cuba berkata jangan tetapi dia kelihatan biasa sahaja..anak saya juga masih belum melambai dan tepuk tangan..juga point sesuatu dgn tangan nya..saya faham setiap bayi tidak sama tetapi saya cuma risau sebab bila baca development yang sepatutnya dicapai..
Adakah ini masih normal atau saya perlu risau kerana ada yang saya baca di internet mengatakan red flags jika ada sign ini…saya risau sangat doktor..
Melambai, tepuk tangan, mengikut memek muka, menunjukkn sesuatu apa yg mereka mahukan…kesemua ini masih belum dicapai..anak saya sudah hampir hendak masuk 11 bulan..adakah masih normal doktor…sebab perkara2 ini adalah baby milestones yg saya baca. Babling menyebut mama baba saya ada dengar anak saya sebut..apabila saya berbincang dengan pengasuh di taska, pengasuh anak saya memberi informasi berlainan..menurut pengasuh anak saya di taska menoleh apabila namanya dipanggil bila 2 3kali dipanggil..dan juga pengasuh mengatakan anak saya boleh buat memek muka..cuma melambai dan tepuk tangan dan point sesuatu sahaja belum..
Adakah ini semua biasa atau macamna ye doktor..harap sangat dapat bantu saya..terima kasih…
