Question: Hi doc! My one year son has been diagnosed with anemia due to lack of iron and folic acid. Currently he has to take folic acid syrup and iron on daily basis. It is such an unpleasant experience that I have to force him to take the supplements. I would like to know the suitable diet for my son to help increase his red blood level.
Thanks. (Ila)
Answer: Puan Ila, you can refer to the list of food that are rich in iron and folic acid nutrients, and encourage good eating habit. The supplements are merely a short term solution, and eventually, a good diet is the key to preventing anaemia. Iron: nuts, beef, lamb and other meat, beans, whole grains, dark leafy greens (spinach), liver Folic acid: beans and peas; dark green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, collard or turnip greens, okra, and asparagus; and citrus fruit and juice.
