Question: If an individual were to suffer AEFI or died as a result of vaccination, where and how do we report the AEFI/death and how do we file for compensation in Malaysia? In the USA, UK and many other countries, families of victims suffering AEFI or death due to vaccination who proved their case can claim compensation. So I’m curious, how about Malaysia? (Alayna)
Answer: Dear Alayana, thank you for your question. However, we cannot answer your question accurately as we do not represent the policymakers and the Ministry of Health. AEFI compensations should be dealt with like other medico-legal case which would be under the purview of government and ministry lawyers and the high officials in the ministry. We recognise that although AEFI is rare, it is an issue that should be prominently addressed and a system that is similar with US /UK is desirable. We suggest you contact the legal department of Ministry of Health for answers. In the meantime, we would furnish you with more information if we have any. Further Information: The government healthcare component has a robust notification system, and all adverse effects of medications including vaccinations should be reported. Hence, the Biro Pengawalah Farmaseutikal Kebangsaan (BPFK) is the body that will be handling the notified cases.
