[Q&A] Underweight problem

Question: Dear Doctors,
I have a two year-old son. He weighs 9.5kg and a height of 80cm (BMI 14.84).
We went to the clinic the last few days, and I was told that my son is underweight. I have noticed that my son is more petite than his peers.
He eats well (all kind of food, he loves fruits), active and healthy. Could this come from genetics, as my wife’s family are thin and small in stature. My wife weighs 40 kg.
Should I be concerned regarding his bodyweight? What can I do to increase his weight?
Thank you docs.

Answer: Hi cool dad, it’s reassuring that he is healthy and eating well. His weight falls around 3rd centile, height is around 2nd centile. I don’t want to give you any false sense of assurance but we do see children who are considered smaller than expected but they are otherwise healthy and there is no cause for concern. Being of a shorter stature and small in size can be familial (runs in the family). I am sure the doctor would have examined and assessed his diet and development milestones to rule out any medical concerns. To put on weight, I suggest high calorie, high nutrient food like cheese, high fat milk, cream (try to add these in all sorts of food), meat. Give frequent meals and healthy snacks in between.
