Dear Fatin,
It is always a good time to start thinking about your child’s oral health care. As your child is already 1 year old, it is important you introduce your child to brushing her teeth at least twice a day. Use a smear of toothpaste (preferably fluoridated) and assist with her tooth brushing using a soft bristle toothbrush (toddler size) with a large handle. Encourage her to spit out the paste fully and rinse after brushing.
As a parent, you can practice “Lift the lip” and examine your child’s mouth ( lookup Lift the Lip – MyHealth Ministry of Health Malaysia – Oral Health)
Next, arrange for your daughter’s first dentist appointment – if you haven’t already. Bring her along to your family dentist for some introductory care and professional advice. It is often a good choice if your dentist has experience with young children; otherwise consider a visit to a paediatric dental specialist who has additional training in caring for children’s oral health. It is recommended that your child visits her dentist about every six months.
On the issue of on demand bottle feeding, most experts would recommend that you wean off the bottle and encourage drinking with a cup. Bottle feeding can increase the risk of Early Childhood Caries and tooth loss from decay.
