Question: Salam and hi. My son is currently 3 months old, was born full term via LSCS. He is active, breastfeeding and thriving well.
I noticed that he has been having subcostal recession and suprasternal retraction since birth, however he is not tachypneic. The recession is not getting worse though. He also makes sounds (like he has much secretion) when he sleeps, but much improved currently. No cough or runny nose so far. Is that normal and would it resolve spontaneously as he grows up, or should I worry?
Many thanks in advance.
Answer: To be exactly sure, a paediatrician have to see in real life. While it is possible that there could be some mild subcostal recession that does not point to resp distress, we could not give assurance without proper assessment. The sound could result from some nasal snuffles which is normal. HIs sleep and feeding should not be affected though, and if it is then it indicates that you should do something about it.
