Question: Dear Doctors,
My 5 month old baby girl started coughing with running nose 3 days ago. Yesterday I took her to see a paediatrician and he diagnosed her with having bronchitis. He prescribed her with the following meds :
Rhinathiol : 0.5ml-3x a day
Bucanil : 0.5ml-3x a day
Zithromax : 1.5ml- 1 per day
Protenix Restore Probiotics : 1 sachet per day
My question is:
Is it safe for a 5 month old baby to consume these meds?
What are the best ways to treat her condition?
Would very much appreciate your feedback on this as I’m worried to give her these medications.
Thank you.
Answer: It would not be right for us, especially when we have not personally examine your child to offer a second opinion on what is the best treatment for her condition. However, as a general rule, cough and flu medications are not to be given to children less than 2 years of age.
if a child is active with no/mild fever/ feeding as usual but has some cough and flu, no rapid or breathing difficulty , the cause is likely viral and therefore is self limiting. which means that fever medication is enough. The illness will improve after a few days (if it doesn’t and there are woe eying symptoms, visit the doctor). But if the cough is chesty and the child is having some breathing problem , depending on the examination findings by the doctor , a child may need nebuliser and if couple with high fever , may need antibiotics.
