[Q&A] My child sweats A LOT

Question: My 5 month old son sweats A LOT, particularly on the back of his neck and feet. Each time he wakes up from sleep, the pillow is literally soaked in sweat. Anytime his head is resting on a pillow/my lap/arms/etc, I’ve noticed the back of his neck would be wet. This started since birth however I use to think it was due to hot/hazy environment, then I’ve realized that even under a fan, he would perspire. It doesn’t seem to bother him but it does affect his sleep. He is FM fed, drinks about 50oz in 24hrs. Pees regularly and poos typically twice a day, everyday. Body temp is usually 36deg. Generally he seems fine but the excessive sweating does worry me. Thank you very much for your time and advice.

Answer: babies often sweat a lot. This could be normal.Sweating around the head during sleep is a common finding in children. However, i need to remind you that it could be a sign of an underlying serious disease especially if sweating is associated with other symptoms e.g fast breathing, trouble feeding and poor weight gain. The other possibility is excessive thyroid hormone. A visit to the paediatricianwould be helpful if the child does have worrying symptoms i mentioned.
