Question: My 9mo son had just recovered from high fever (39.4-40.2c) 2 days ago. Brought him to the hospital and blood test read that he is fine. Yesterday which makes it 1st day after his fever recovery, he developed rashes on his face, chest and back. Whole night last night he didn’t sleep well, and sometimes he would cry inconsolably. Should I be alarmed and bring him to the hospital? What could it be?
Answer: As there are many causes of rash, im afraid i cant point to a diagnosis without looking at the rash myself. Whenever a child has fever for a few days, a blood test is usually done to rule out the possibility of dengue or other infection. However, a child can get worse despite a normal blood count as the result is only a reflection of that particular time. If he is drinking well, active, sleeps well, passes urine as usual, I would not hv been too worried. But crying inconsolably is a symptom that needs further examination especially in the light of having rash and a recent fever. There are non-worrying causes to rash , which usually happens when fever settles but the child would be well-looking. However, based on the history u hv given , i strongly urge you to go to the hospital. I do not want to alarm you as to the possibilities but needless to say he needs to be thoroughly examined by the doctor. Wishing him well.
