Question: 1. My son is 2 years and 2 months now. He has had eczema since he was a month old. At the moment i am using Econazine on his hands and legs. But now I see him scratching his face and the skin underneath the eye area is dry and scaly. I didn’t want to put econazine there because I am afraid of the discoloration effect it has. Please advice what kind of cream that I can put for eczema in facial areas.
2. My 2nd son is 4 months and 2 days now and has a recurring cradle cap. He used to have it as a newborn and i used Dentinox and it went away then i started to use other common baby brands like pureen. Now that it is back i start to use Dentinox again, once a day and everyday and it looks like the cradle cap is not going away and spreading. What should i do?
Answer: Dear Puan Sofia, 1. I suggest a proper mild steroid, like a hydorcortisone 0.5% cream to be applied thinly (according to finger tip unit), and when the redness and itchiness resolve, please maintain with a suitable moisturiser. Econazine may not be the best option here. The main principle here is to avoid trigger factor, to soothe the inflammation with use of steroids judiciously for a short term basis, and to maintain good skin health by using suitable cleanser and moisturiser. Your child’s skin is sensitive and thus require extra care. 2. A cradle cap might get opportunistic infection by fungus and may need antifungal. Using oil may help as well. I suggest you discuss this with the baby’s paediatrician, let him assess because if it is an extensive cradle cap, more than just Dentinox will be needed. There are other shampoo options that contain salicylate acid, but you should discuss this with your doctor first.
