Question: My 3.5-month-old baby has birthmark around the eyelid. Is it harmful? Is there any treatment and should it be treated? (Chong Li Yun)
Answer: Perhaps this article will be useful to you. This also depends on what kind of birthmark – is it a reddish patch which is a haemangioma (abnormal collection /grouping of blood vessels) or a faint patch (hypopigmentation) or dark coloured (naevus) or coffee coloured patch which may be normal or may be associated with neurological problem? Treatment is secondary and usually more for aesthetic point of view, but the real concern is whether the presence of the birthmark in the face(eyelid) represent some similar lesion(problem) in the brain which would then cause seizures, or neurological issue. I suggest you consult a paediatrician/ or a paediatric dermatologist who can examine the patient in real life, to offer advice and guidance.
