[Q&A] Medicine Storage Duration

Question: Hi doctors, would like to ask how long can we keep the remaining of syrup medicines (for fever n cold) frm paed clinics after it is opened? Do we need to keep it in the fridge once it is opened?

Secondly, there are 2 bottles of powdered antibiotic from the paed clinic which has not been opened for consumption before. The 2 bottles now are in the fridge for more thn a year already. Is it still consumable?

Appreciate your feedback on the above. Just to ensure that i did not feed my kid with xpired medicines.

Thanks in advance. (Vivian)

Answer: Syrup medicine that is opened should be kept in cool, dry place as in all medicine. Only keep in fridge if the instruction say so, because fridge can be wet and also accesible to children. Usually, not advisable to keep more than 3 months because the drug may not be so effective anymore. For unopened medicine, you can follow the expiry date written.
