[Q&A] NBO

Question: Hi..I have a 1 month old baby female..no bowel output for 9 days today..on breast feeding 2 hourly. No bottle milk. Flatus present. Active on handling..p/a soft not distended. Per rectum empty.rectal stimulation done in day 6.. Weight gain good. When I speak to one of the child doctor in hospital..they told me that its normal to have no bowel output for 10 days. So just wondering watelse can I do for child and what would the reason behind this? Thanks doctor

Answer: Yes, I agree with the doctor you spoke because your child is exclusively breastfed and you have given me the good signs such as good weight gain, no abdominal distension and feeding well. Thus, this rule out true constipation and and significant GI problem. This could be due to the gentle texture of breastmilk which helps in absorption. It is very rare for a fully breastfed infant to get true constipation.
