Question: Salam dear doctors,
I am Malaysian living in Germany. My 1 year old daughter is vaccinated according to German vaccination schedule. She got the same jabs as in Malaysia’s except BCG. We are coming back to Malaysia soon for holiday. Does she need the BCG? Her doctor told me to get it Malaysia because they don’t have it here. Is it safe for my daughter to travel without BCG?
Answer: The BCG vaccination program is not universal worldwide. I do not know how it is in Germany but if that’s what the doc said, then I supposed you do not have other choice but to get it done in Malaysia. TB is spread through air ( e.g sneezes, cough) and is usually transmitted to kids by adults. If she is exposed to a person with TB , the risk is there but that could happen anywhere and not merely during travel. The incidence is much less in Germany , however in Malaysia, TB is common esp now with the influx of foreign workers.
